All In The Family – A Family Business That Works

One of my favorite TV shows is Food Network’s “Restaurant Impossible” with Chef Robert Irvine.  Each week, Chef Irvine intervenes with a restaurant in desperate need of a complete makeover. Within days of Irvine working his magic, the restaurant is running at full speed.  Some of the most intriguing episodes have featured family-owned restaurants that overcome both business and familial relationship challenges.  Throughout my life I’ve gotten to know quite a few family run businesses and am always impressed with people who are able to successfully navigate both the business and personal aspects of business ownership.  I’d like to introduce you to a business that does it well. Isabelle K Jewelry is a small business that thrives on the family relationship. Isabelle K Jewelry is a successful business that features jewelry from the same talented designers that create jewelry for Chanel and other top global fashion companies. Isabelle, the company’s namesake, was born and raised in Paris, France.  She met her husband, Rick, while studying in the US as a foreign exchange student.  After school, Rick landed a job and the couple moved to Virginia Beach, VA.  It was during this time that Isabelle, the entrepreneur, started her jewelry company … Keep Reading...

Mother’s Day- Celebrate your Small Business Owner working mom!

When Mother’s Day rolls around, it’s hard for me not to think of my childhood and the many things that my mom did for me as I grew up. Some were just expected; kissing boo-boos, giving hugs. Some were more profound and life altering! Looking ahead, I’ve also come to enjoy the many stories of my Mother-In-Law as well from my wife. Both women, but polar opposite experiences, both involved in small-business life. My mom worked the corporate life. Corporate meetings, corporate lunches, corporate business suits. She also worked within the community, even was bestowed the honor of “Citizen of the Year” from our hometown, which she was instrumental in helping become an actual city. She also volunteered heavily in our school and PTA meetings. She was well connected. Through all her corporate life, I always remember her mentioning she would love to “own her own business.” Well, when my twin sister and I were at that highly impressionable age of pre-teen, she decided to take that risk. She quit her corporate life, with her corporate lunches and corporate suits, and traded it all in for US, two pre-teens, a tiny home office in the master bedroom, and pajamas. Later … Keep Reading...

Who is your Small Business’s Mother-In-Law?

Mother-in-law jokes are legion. “Take my mother-in-law … PLEASE!” “I haven’t spoken to my mother-in-law in two years. No, we’re not quarrelling, I just don’t like to interrupt her.” “Behind every successful man or woman stands a devoted spouse … and a very surprised mother-in-law.” There are many more “good” mother-in-laws out there than there are ones who fit the stand-up comic’s stereotypes. And even those who are sometimes hard to deal with are most likely “nagging” out of the best of intentions. They want their children’s spouses to be successful, provide well for the family, and give the grandkids great lives. They want you and your family to be happy! Actually, would it be a good thing if your small business had a mother-in-law? Someone who kept you on your toes; a closely connected “outside observer” who wasn’t afraid to speak up if you let things lag a bit or you weren’t making maximum effort to achieve your business plan and goals? Just as in marriage, it’s far better to have a small business mother-in-law who is sincerely understanding and encouraging; one who listens more than she talks; one who sits back and thinks about what you just said … Keep Reading...

Facebook Security Settings, Don’t Panic!

I was conferring with a colleague at Deluxe this week regarding Facebook security settings. I sought to gain admin access to one of our Facebook channels, and in the process, we noticed his profile was extremely public even though he was diligent to stay abreast of the changing security features Facebook offers. This sent both of us to panic as we are adamant about ensuring our profiles are private. I checked my profile as well, and noticed the same phenomenon. What was worse, we had no idea on how to fix it! We of course turned to Google, and this is what we found: Apparently, there is a fix to the issue, and it has been around for at least a year. In this article, the author discusses a manual way of searching through each post that you’ve EVER posted and changing the setting to post only to friends. Of course, who has the time to do all that? The other more global fix is much simpler! Although, Facebook makes it seem pretty scary, as boxes pop up warning you that the action cannot be reversed, take a deep breath, because it really isn’t a big deal, and it accomplishes … Keep Reading...
