What SEO and March Madness Have In Common

Written By: Adam Dince Since we’re in the midst of March Madness hysteria, I thought it appropriate to nerd up the sport of college basketball with an SEO parallel.  I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not a big college basketball fan.  In fact, as I’ve gotten older, I’ve lost interest in college sports all together.  However, there are exceptions where I enjoy following successful college basketball franchises.  I’m always captivated by teams that continuously win regardless of player turnover.  The common thread among these successful franchises seems to be a brilliant coach. One of the teams I’ve admired most is the Duke Blue Devils.  In fact, when I think of college basketball, I think of Duke and Coach K., Mike Krzyzewski.  At Duke, Krzyzewski has led the Blue Devils to four NCAA Championships, 11 Final Fours, 12 Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) regular season titles, and 13 ACC Tournament championships.  In addition, he’s led the US men’s national team to two Olympic gold medals (WikiPedia). Like college basketball, SEO is a game.  It’s a game in which to the victors go the spoils—and the spoils can be lucrative.  In this competition for above the fold visibility in search results, only few will win the ultimate prize—a … Keep Reading...

It’s Far Better To be Good Than Lucky When It Comes To SEO

Written By: Adam Dince I love St. Patrick’s Day!  It’s a fun time to gather with friends, have a green beer or two at the local watering hole and join an old-fashioned Irish hymn sing-a-long.  And what St. Patty’s Day event would be complete without a toast to “The luck of the Irish”?  How great would it be if there actually was a pot of gold at the end of every rainbow?  How wonderful would it be if our Websites attracted visitors and made money by sheer luck?  Unfortunately, neither of the aforementioned scenarios is likely to happen (unless of course you’re lucky).  Additionally, it’s highly unlikely to be found in a search engine results page by publishing a Website without optimizing it to the greatest advantage. Let’s get geeky for a second and talk numbers:  Google’s ranking algorithm is the secret sauce that powers the listings in its search results, is made up of +/- 200 factors.  Furthermore, Google updates its ranking algorithm two to three times a day.  That equates to nearly 700 annual adjustments to its formula.  Feeling lucky? The number of pages stored in Google’s database is massive.  Let’s say you’re a pet food store and you … Keep Reading...

Do you Google? Of Course! and So Do Your Customers

Written By: Adam Dince Just as “facial tissue” is called “Kleenex” the name “Google” is widely used as a generic verb meaning to “search online.” Go “Google” it. After all, Google is the largest database of online content in the universe. Search engine use has never been higher, and it’s going to continue to grow.  Consider: 83% of all on-line journeys begin with a search — Google 2011 Over 50% of all Americans conduct a search every month — Vanessa Fox, Marketing in the Age of Google Nearly 23 billion monthly searches are conducted by Americans — Vanessa Fox, Marketing in the Age of Google Why the boom?  Simple. It has never been easier to search. When you’re on a business trip, and you’ve got to find restaurant to wine and dine your client, where do you go?  Most likely a search engine on your mobile device. How about when you’re in a store and find a product you want to purchase, but want to make sure you’re getting the best price?  Do you call around to other stores to get price comparison info or do you go to a search engine?  You pull out your phone and do a search. … Keep Reading...

Land Your Share of 100 Billion Searches a Month

Consider this: according to Google V.P. Marissa Mayer 20 percent of all Google searches are local searches.  Google also reports it is now handling more than 100 billion searches a month. Add in the volume handled by smaller players like Yahoo, Bing and the rest, and you’re looking at a number approaching a billion – that’s with a B – local searches a day. Tapping into even a miniscule portion of this staggering local search volume can create dramatic results for your small business.  So what’s a “local search?”  It’s any search in which the seeker specifies a “where component.” For example instead of just Googling “plumber” the seeker specifies “plumber Hartford CT.” Or instead of simply searching for a “roofing contractor” he or she keys in “roofer San Fernando Valley”.  To maximize your business’s visibility to these kinds of locale specific searches, Directory Listings are critically important. They help establish your location (name, address, phone number) and improve your relevancy and position. They also tie information back to your website, which helps generate visits and reviews and, ultimately, enhances your credibility. These kinds of boosters are important to any small business, but especially to building, construction, and maintenance contractors.  … Keep Reading...
