Online Directories: 4 Steps to Spring Clean Your Business Listings

If you’re like most up-to-date business owners, you know when your website ranks high on the first page of Google, it’s worth gold — but did you know local directory listings also increase both your visibility and chances to connect with new customers? For example, I did a quick search for BBQ restaurants in my hometown.  In addition to the four restaurants that ranked in the top map listing slots, one in particular showed up an additional six times on the first page, getting listed in the following directories: Yelp, TripAdvisor, Urbanspoon, Facebook, Food Network and Metromix. Most of these directories are free, with some offering more advanced listing services for a small fee.  If you haven’t done a wide-sweeping search for your business in a while, take the following four steps to see if and how your listing appears. Step 1 – visit getlisted.org to start your directory listing search by entering your business name and zip code Step 2 – confirm your business is listed AND claimed on the top three search engines: Google, Bing and Yahoo.  Expand out to other directories only when you’ve finished these first three. Step 3 – when claiming your listing, be sure to use … Keep Reading...

It’s Far Better To be Good Than Lucky When It Comes To SEO

Written By: Adam Dince I love St. Patrick’s Day!  It’s a fun time to gather with friends, have a green beer or two at the local watering hole and join an old-fashioned Irish hymn sing-a-long.  And what St. Patty’s Day event would be complete without a toast to “The luck of the Irish”?  How great would it be if there actually was a pot of gold at the end of every rainbow?  How wonderful would it be if our Websites attracted visitors and made money by sheer luck?  Unfortunately, neither of the aforementioned scenarios is likely to happen (unless of course you’re lucky).  Additionally, it’s highly unlikely to be found in a search engine results page by publishing a Website without optimizing it to the greatest advantage. Let’s get geeky for a second and talk numbers:  Google’s ranking algorithm is the secret sauce that powers the listings in its search results, is made up of +/- 200 factors.  Furthermore, Google updates its ranking algorithm two to three times a day.  That equates to nearly 700 annual adjustments to its formula.  Feeling lucky? The number of pages stored in Google’s database is massive.  Let’s say you’re a pet food store and you … Keep Reading...

Land Your Share of 100 Billion Searches a Month

Consider this: according to Google V.P. Marissa Mayer 20 percent of all Google searches are local searches.  Google also reports it is now handling more than 100 billion searches a month. Add in the volume handled by smaller players like Yahoo, Bing and the rest, and you’re looking at a number approaching a billion – that’s with a B – local searches a day. Tapping into even a miniscule portion of this staggering local search volume can create dramatic results for your small business.  So what’s a “local search?”  It’s any search in which the seeker specifies a “where component.” For example instead of just Googling “plumber” the seeker specifies “plumber Hartford CT.” Or instead of simply searching for a “roofing contractor” he or she keys in “roofer San Fernando Valley”.  To maximize your business’s visibility to these kinds of locale specific searches, Directory Listings are critically important. They help establish your location (name, address, phone number) and improve your relevancy and position. They also tie information back to your website, which helps generate visits and reviews and, ultimately, enhances your credibility. These kinds of boosters are important to any small business, but especially to building, construction, and maintenance contractors.  … Keep Reading...

Mobile Goliaths, One Giant Lesson

The fight for mobile Internet dominance is continuously happening in both the technological and legal ring. The latest round and victory is Apple’s case against Samsung in a civil suit alleging patent infringement, costing Samsung over $1 billion dollars. There is so much at stake that the mobile Goliaths are spending ginormous amounts of money to fight off the competition in device production. Apple and Samsung, as well as Google (Motorola), are fighting it out in this patent war because that is where the battle of the Internet will be won. There is little profitability and innovation in desktop and laptop manufacturing. Only Apple makes money consistently in these areas. There is little incentive for manufacturers to fight over patents for personal computers. Manufacturers will continue to innovate and compete primarily in the mobile sphere – lighter, faster devices to help us work and play harder. All of the innovation, all of the new product launches, all of your customers – they are going to be mobile. When I speak with small business owners, it is sometimes apparent that the thought of learning yet another way to market their business seems overwhelming. We have had Facebook since 2006 and still, … Keep Reading...
